The continued dependence on oil poses interlinked problems ranging from volatile prices, international conflicts to climate change impacts. The present paper evaluates the various alternatives to oil, such as solar, wind, hydro, biofuels, hydrogen and nuclear energy, and identifies the obstacles preventing the use of each alternative. In addition to comparing the alternatives, the paper uses a comparative descriptive method of analysis using statistical data and other research findings on the issue in order to identify the best solution. It is demonstrated that none of the alternatives is able to address the problem individually, and thus the diversification of alternatives coupled with improved storage systems and policies is the most realistic option available.
